Terms of Service

Not a lawyer, not legal advice. This is a solid starting template written specifically for what TrailMuster does, but it hasn't been reviewed by an attorney. Given that this product sends people toward real backcountry trips, get a real legal review before you treat this as your final terms — the safety and liability sections in particular are worth a professional's eyes.

What TrailMuster is

TrailMuster is a trip-planning tool. It helps you find campgrounds and backpacking trails, estimate trip costs, build packing lists, and coordinate group trips. It is a planning aid — not an emergency service, not a substitute for official trail or safety information, and not a guarantee of any particular outcome for your trip.

Trail & safety information — please read this

Trail, distance, elevation, difficulty, and route data on TrailMuster comes from public and community-maintained sources (including OpenStreetMap and Recreation.gov) and can be incomplete, outdated, or wrong. Backcountry conditions change fast — trail washouts, wildlife closures, fire restrictions, snowpack, and water availability are not always reflected here. Before any trip, especially overnight or wilderness travel, verify current conditions, required permits, and safety information directly with the managing agency (the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, BLM, or Recreation.gov).

You are solely responsible for assessing your own and your group's fitness, experience, and preparedness for any trip you plan using TrailMuster, and for making your own safety decisions in the field.

Permits & availability

Permit and lottery information is tracked from Recreation.gov and similar sources for your convenience. TrailMuster does not control permit availability, does not guarantee you will obtain a permit, and is not affiliated with Recreation.gov or any land-management agency.

Gear recommendations

Gear suggestions (including "budget," "ultralight," and "comfort" picks) are general recommendations, not personalized safety advice, and we don't independently test every product. Some destinations have specific required gear — for example, certain Sierra wilderness areas require an approved bear canister (see the Sierra Interagency Black Bear Group's approved list). Always confirm any required gear meets your specific destination's current regulations before you go; don't rely solely on a general recommendation from this app for regulatory or safety-critical gear decisions.

TrailMuster participates in the Amazon Associates affiliate program and may earn a commission on qualifying purchases through links on this site, at no extra cost to you. This does not affect which products we recommend.

Accounts

You're responsible for keeping your account credentials secure and for activity that happens under your account. Provide accurate information when you sign up. We may suspend or terminate accounts used for abuse, fraud, or violation of these terms.

Group features

If you create or join a group trip, other members of that group can see the trip details, roster, and gear claims you or they add. You're responsible for who you invite into a group. TrailMuster is not responsible for disputes between group members (for example, about who was supposed to bring what).

Acceptable use

Don't use TrailMuster to:

  • Scrape, reverse-engineer, or overload our systems or APIs;
  • Harass, impersonate, or abuse other users in group features;
  • Use the service for anything illegal or that violates the terms of the third-party data sources we rely on (RIDB, OpenStreetMap, Google, Amazon, etc.);
  • Attempt to access another user's account or data without permission.

No warranty

TrailMuster is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied — including accuracy, completeness, reliability, or fitness for a particular purpose. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any trail, weather, cost, or permit data is accurate or current.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, TrailMuster and its creators are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service — including injury, loss, or damage arising from outdoor recreation activities you plan using information from this app. Nothing here is intended to limit liability that cannot legally be limited.

Assumption of risk

Camping, hiking, and backpacking carry inherent risks — including injury, exposure, wildlife encounters, and remote-area hazards — independent of anything TrailMuster does or doesn't do correctly. By using this service to plan a trip, you acknowledge and accept those risks as your own responsibility.

Termination

You may stop using TrailMuster and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate access to the service, for you or for everyone, at our discretion — for example, to address abuse, legal requirements, or discontinuing the service.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as TrailMuster changes. We'll update the "Last updated" date above when we do. Continued use of the service after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, unless a different jurisdiction is more appropriate for where TrailMuster is legally based — update this if that changes.
